The History of Police in America

The police force as we know it today was created in the early 1900s. But its origins date back to the very first American colonies. Some say the police's history started as a force for good, while others say it was mired in racism and xenophobia. The original tactics of the militia were to control new immigrants, while other regions created groups to control slaves.

Police are rightfully praised for their responses to public safety threats, and we hear so much about them as a force for good. But in every decade since their beginning, police forces have been accused of mass corruption and indiscriminate brutality.

Here's the untold history of the police in America.
